What Is The Circular Economy?
The circular economy is one of the three pillars of our Drive the Future plan that is being rolled out by Groupe Renault across the globe. In order to position ourselves as a pioneer and leader that provides sustainable mobility for all, we are currently focussed on three main leadership goals – electric vehicles, driverless vehicles and the circular economy.
The traditional linear economy is based on a make-use-dispose model, whereas a circular economy aims to keep resources (like vehicles) in use for as long as possible, and then recover and reuse the constituent products and materials thereof at the very end of its life cycle. In 2004, a study found that more than 25% of the carbon emissions generated by a typical gas-powered vehicle throughout its life cycle occurs during its manufacture and the initial transportation of the vehicle to the dealership. As such, it makes sense to make full use of this kind of resource before disposing thereof.
Electric Cars VS Pre-Owned Internal Combustion Vehicles
While it would be ideal if every South African citizen could be driving an e-vehicle like the Renault Zoe, and have the wherewithal to generate solar power at their homes instead of drawing off the coal-powered municipal grid, the truth is that the infrastructure to support such an undertaking is still in development. Currently, e-charging stations are still a rare sight in our country.
In the meantime, the best thing we can do to support the drive for a greener tomorrow, is to take good care of the vehicles we drive to ensure that their emissions are as low as possible, and to invest in pre-owned vehicles.
