The salesman told me to decide fast because they move quickly. “Ja, ja, salesman talk,” I thought, I have time.” Two days later when I phoned for the Qashqai, it was gone and I was disappointed. I was looking to trade in my venerable 2006 X-Trail and immediately fell in love with the Qashqai – a late first-gen 1.6, white, low mileage, fair price. It was the first time I had really looked closely at this oddly-named car. You would see them in the street, nice looking, nothing special. Until you look at the boot – the nearest thing to match my X-Trail I could afford then.
The Qashqai was launched in 2006 as the first car of the class to later become the crossover segment. It is a city car that can comfortably go off-road. It handles like a large sedan but has the luggage and passenger space of an SUV. It arrived here not long after launch and has been a perennial favourite. The Qashqai is a lot of car and the price of the new ones reflect this value. But they are long-lasting cars and a good used Qashqai will give you value for money like nothing else. Just think how many older Qashqais you see on our roads.
In 2010 the Qashqai had a major body update, and in 2011 a new series of engines were added. The first generation also offered the seven-seat +2 version, but this was discontinued in the second generation and it place taken by a seven-seat variant of the X-Trail generation launched in 2013.
The second generation was launched in 2013, with continuous features and looks updates keeping it fresh until 2018, when it had a major refresh.
