Our Favourite Budget Cars With Digital Instrument Clusters

Digital instrument cluster

Looking for an afforable car with a digital instrument cluster? Here’s our top 4 choices!

Cars have changed significantly in recent years with touchscreen systems and other luxury features no longer reserved for high-end models. Today, digital instrument clusters are fast gaining popularity and are a common sight in most affordable cars.

That’s not all, though, as many newer, budget cars also have wireless charging, auto climate control, and touchscreen systems only seen before on premium models. If you are in the market for affordable cars with digital instrument clusters, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, here are the top four available at Group1 Cars.

Renault Kwid

Renault offers LED digital instrument clusters from the base-spec variant of the Kwid. It is the only model within its segment to feature a digital driver’s display. On the Renault Kwid, the instrument cluster has digital readouts with more information, including tachometer and fuel level. At the same time, a centrally placed TFT screen displays the odometer, speed, and gear position indicator on the manual variants.

The Renault Kwid is available in three variants – Expression, Dynamic and Climber – each with features you’d previously only find on more premium cars. Some of these include digital instrument clusters, ABS and EBD, Rear Park Distance Sensors, electric windows, airbags and Bluetooth streaming among others.

A new base model Renault Kwid costs from R159 400 up to R192 000 for the top-spec Climber AMT Auto. At Group1, you can buy a preowned Renault Kwid from as low as R89 700 to around R185 900.

Renault Triber

The Renault Triber must be one of the best-looking budget cars on the market. Like the entry-level Renault Kwid hatchback, the Triber also gets digital instrument clusters and many other driver aids as standard. The display is similar to that of the Renault Kwid with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and navigation among other features.

The Triber is also the only model in its price range to get a digitised gauge cluster. Other luxury features include airbags, ABS and EBD, electric windows, air conditioning, rear park distance sensors and Bluetooth audio streaming. On the higher-spec models, you also get an 8-inch MediaNav Evolution Touchscreen, electric side mirrors, ECO driving and reverse parking camera among others.

The Renault Triber comes with a segment-first modular third row which is also known as the Easy Fix. It allows you to convert the Triber into a 7-seater, 6-seater or 5-seater within minutes and with no special tools. It has ample head and legroom, storage space and a 60-40 split which means there is plenty of room for the whole family.

A new Renault Triber is priced between R186 000 and R218 900 but you can find a good quality used Renaut Triber at Group1 from R189 000 for the Dynamique model and around R200 000 for the Prestige derivative. View our list of Renault Triber cars for sale.

Hyundai Grand i10

Hyundai offers hybrid digital instrument clusters from the mid-spec trim combining an analogue tachometer with a digital speedometer. It has large, easily readable numbers plus a basic trip computer. While the Nios-badged Grand i10 version for the Indian market has an eight-inch touchscreen, South African models get a 6.2-inch aftermarket system.

Even though it’s smaller, it also has Apple CarPlay, Android Auto functionality and an extra USB port. The digital instrument clusters on the Hyundai Grand i10 display information such as distance to empty, fuel efficiency, average speed and gear data for the manual versions.

While a new Hyundai Grand i10 can cost between R196 900 and R263 500 (1.25-litre Fluid MT), you can find a used Grand i10 at Group1 from only R135 000. Browse our available used Hyundai Grand i10 models and get this little gem of a budget car.

Hyundai i20

Last on our list is the Hyundai i20, in particular the third generation which gets digital instrument clusters across all variants, except the base model. It’s a similar unit as the Grand i10 where digital instrument clusters combine with an eight-inch infotainment system featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality. It shows digital readouts for the speedometer and tachometer among other important bits of data.

In terms of safety and other features, the Hyundai i20 is fully loaded with airbags, ABS and EBD, air conditioning, rearview camera, electric windows and side mirrors and remote keyless entry. On the high spec models, you also get cruise control, park assist, side and curtain airbags and wireless phone charging.

A new Hyundai i20 will set you back between R275 900 and R360 900 for the top-spec 1.0-litre TGDI Fluid DCT. If you want a good quality used Hyundai i20, Group1 has several on the books.

Group1 Cars is one of the leading companies selling quality pre-owned cars from all major makes and models in South Africa.
