The 3rd generation of the BMW 1 Series (F40) was launched in 2019. Unlike the previous F20 series, the F40 is only available as a 5-door hatchback. It comes with front-wheel and all-wheel drive options. This third generation 1 Series is available as the 116i, 118i, 120i, 128ti, M135i xDrive, 116d, 118d, 120d and 120d XDrive. The F40 is 5mm shorter, 34mm wider and 13mm taller than the previous F20 generation. Because of a tighter-fitting front-wheel drive engine, legroom is bigger in the front and the back. The boot capacity has increased by 20 litres to 380 litres, and 1200 litres with the rear seats folded flat. It is also 30kg lighter because of the increased use of aluminium. The M135i xDrive features a limited slip differential, larger M Sport brakes, a strut bar, and a larger 100 mm (3.9 in) diameter exhaust. This model was updated in late 2021 with retuned springs, dampers and the trailing arm, and control arm mounts. The second generation of the BMW 1 Series was released in 2011 and has played a major part in the ongoing growth of the BMW brand in South Africa. Available as both a 3-door hatchback and a 5-door hatchback, it is a vehicle that not only makes an impression on the road, but also on those who drive it. With a sporty design and dynamic driving characteristics, the 1 Series BMW is fun on the roads, a pleasure in the city and safe for the family. Initially, the 1 Series in South Africa was powered by one of two engine options, namely the four-cylinder petrol and four-cylinder diesel engines; however, since 2015 a six-cylinder petrol engine and three-cylinder petrol and diesel engines have been made available in South Africa as well. It is important to note that this generation of the 1 Series BMW is the first to include an all-wheel drive BMW xDrive version. Did You Know? With the launch of the updated second-generation BMW 1 Series in 2013, the coupé and convertible models that were available in the first generation and early second generation have been rebadged as the BMW 2 Series. It is therefore important to note that these body styles are no longer part of the current range. However, the 3 and 5-door body options in the New Series 1 BMW Range, combined with BMW’s distinctive styling and up to 10 different Series 1 trim levels, ensure that these hatchbacks remain one of the most popular BMWs on South African roads today. |

The first generation BMW 1 Series range is a small hatchback, coupe and convertible car that was first launched in 2004 and made a name for itself as the least expensive vehicle in the BMW range in South Africa. It was available 4 different body layouts, namely the:
The first generation Series 1 BMWs received facelifts and model updates in 2007 and 2011. It is interesting to note that in 2008 the 1 series BMW 118d was awarded the “World Green Car Award”, for CO2 levels that were similar to those of the eco-friendly Toyota Prius. Did You Know? This generation of the BMW Series 1 was the first to include a “proof of concept” BMW ActiveE as a demonstration electric car. Subsequently, 1,100 of these Series 1 EVs were manufactured to full production standards and were sold and tested in the USA and China. Q: Is the 1 Series only available as a hatchback?
A: The current generation is only available as a 5-door hatchback. Although the 2017 BMW 1 Series, 2016 BMW 1 Series, 2015 BMW 1 Series and 2014 BMW 1 Series are only available as hatchbacks there are older models that predate 2013 which include coupé and convertible models.
Q: Is there a petrol and a diesel BMW 1 Series engine option?
A: Yes there is! In fact, almost all BMW vehicles sold in South Africa come with petrol or diesel engine options.
Q: Is there an all-wheel-drive version of the BMW 1 Series available?
A: There is not just one, but 3 all-wheel-drive BMW 1 Series options to choose from, including 1 petrol driven option and 2 diesel options. All three use BMW’s xDrive which provides a variable torque split between the front and rear axles.
