BMW introduced the eighth sequel of the 5 Series saga in May 2023, with deliveries starting in late 2023. This new version of the popular sports sedan and family car comes with a refined design and plenty of modern features. But the real headline is the debut of the all-electric i5 models, especially the exciting i5 M60 xDrive (equipped with extensively enhanced fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology), along with the new mild-hybrid 520d.

The latest BMW 5 Series for sale and its electric i5 sibling are bigger than the previous generation. It’s now over 5 metres long, and the wheelbase has been stretched by 20 mm, giving it more room inside.

Collectively referred to as the F10, the 6th-generation BMW 5 Series is also one of the top-selling in South Africa. It makes up a large portion of our used 5 Series sales and remains one of the most sought-after luxury sedans in the country. This is due in part to its affordability (due to it being a previous generation vehicle), but the fact that it has one of the highest standard spec levels of any vehicle in its class. The BMW M5 of this generation had a “Competition Package” version, which pushed the power and torque levels to unbelievable heights.

Launched globally between 2003 and 2004, this generation of 5 series was an instant hit with the driving public thanks to its standard features. These included the iDrive infotainment system which was previously only found in the 7 Series BMWs. Optional features in the fifth-generation 5 Series BMW included an 8-inch LCD screen, satellite navigation and even DVD video playback.

Did You Know? There were two very different model variants of the 5 Series built during this generation. These were the BMW 5 Series Security which came standard with ballistic steel, aramid, polyethene and 21mm polycarbonate layered glass; and the BMW 5 Series Authority Vehicle which was designed for police forces. This last model variant was (and is still used) by our local police services.
