1st Generation Mercedes-Benz A-Class (W168)
1997 – 2004

The first generation A-Class Merc was built between 1997 and 2004 (1999 and 2005 Brazil). It was first revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1997.

The A160 was a radical departure from previous models. I was short and tall and featured front wheel drive.

The new A-Class featured a new safety feature, the so-called sandwich bar. In a front-on collision, the engine and gearbox would slide under the floor, rather than into the cabin.

After initial scepticism and an expensive overhaul of the stability systems, the A-Class proved highly popular as a car with Merc build quality, but offering small car zip.
