First Generation Hyundai Accent
1994 – 2000

Introduced to replace the Hyundai Excel in 1994, the Hyundai Accent very quickly made a name for itself as a reliable and affordable car. The upper specification models were packed full of features which were ahead of their time in this subcompact vehicle class. These included a comfortable height and lumbar support adjustment function on the driver’s seat, an impressive four-speaker sound system, a handy passenger vanity mirror, a tachometer, and a power antenna. During its 6-year run, the first-generation Hyundai Accent underwent a number of small cosmetic and accessory changes across all trim levels, with the only major facelift occurring in the 1997 model.

Did You Know? Folksam, which is a renowned Swedish insurance company, has rated the first-generation Hyundai Accent as one of the safest vehicles in its weight class. Which just goes to show that even back in mid to late 1990’s Hyundai was already helping to shape the future of vehicle safety.

These changes included the introduction of new engines, one of which was Hyundai’s award-winning 1.5-litre three-cylinder direct injection turbodiesel.

An automatic transmission was also made available in South Africa for the first time.

Fourth Generation Hyundai Accent
2010 – Current

Originally released in November 2010 in South Korea, the current generation of Hyundai Accent soon made the impression of a big sale in China, America, Canada, Russia, India and South Africa. The new look and feel were met with critical acclaim, and the previous generations 1.6-liter engine and 6-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission options were retained to power and drive this generation of Accent. This helped to ensure technical and fuel consumption continuity, which were also coincidentally two of the biggest drawcards when Hyundai customers were quizzed globally about what made them purchase a Hyundai Accent.

Did You Know? Out of all of the previous generation Hyundai Accent cars, this is the one that has truly stood out when it comes to safety features. Across the world it has been awarded 4 and 5-star NCAP and U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration accolades, including 4 stars for frontal, side and rollover crash safety. This makes it the safest Hyundai Accent yet, with even more safety improvements expected in the next (as yet unconfirmed) fifth-generation Hyundai Accent.
