Used Opel Astra For Sale

Launched in Frankfurt in 2015 at the city’s Annual Motor Show, the current generation of Opel Astra is referred to as the Astra K. Slightly smaller and considerably lighter than the Astra J (see below) that preceded it, the Astra K has proven to be yet another feather in the cap of the Opel brand in South Africa thanks to its continued sales growth. This is due in part to its reliability and the trust that South African consumers have in the Opel name. One of the other reasons however is the Astra’s outstanding comfort, convenience and safety features (more about the latter in our FAQ section further down the page) which perfectly compliment its eye catching body sculpting and visual style.

Did You Know? Depending on the model variant and trim level the New Opel Astra is up to 200 kgs lighter than its predecessor! This is thanks to its improved vehicle architecture which uses a body shell that reduced the curb weight by 20% from 357 kgs to 280 kgs.

Based on the styling of the Opel Insignia, which was a large family car sold by Opel at the time, the Astra J debuted in 2009 to much fanfare. Built on General Motors Delta Platform, it was conceived by Opel’s ‘International Technical Development Center’ (ITDC) in Rüsselsheim. Within a year of its launch it was placed third in the European Car of the Year Awards.

The 4-door Opel Astra sedan/saloon was also available during this J generation in South Africa, as well as an OPC trim of the Astra J (sold between 2012 and 2015). This Opel Astra OPC has proven to be exceptionally popular in the pre-owned vehicle market.

Did You Know? The Astra J was originally going to be called the “Astra I”, but to avoid confusing the letter I with the number 1 it was changed to J at the 11th hour before vehicle sales commenced.

Launched in 2004, the Astra H was larger than all previous Astra Hatchback models and was also made available as a 4-door saloon and 2-door convertible (called an Opel Astra TwinTop). Did You Know? The Opel Astra H was the second Astra generation to receive an OPC model variant, which was officially launched in 2005. It was powered by one of the best engines Opel has ever built, the legendary (and always reliable) 2.0 L turbo engine which produced 177 kW of power and 320 Nm of torque.

Many of which were built in South Africa at the Delta Motor Factory in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape.

Did You Know? Opel won the 24th Nürburgring in 2003 with a V8 Astra G series Coupé. This speed machine was powered by 4.0L, 500hp, V8 engine which pushed out 370 kW of engine power.

The Opel Astra F launched at the end of 1991 as a 1992 model year and was the global successor to the Opel Kadett Vehicle Range. Here in South Africa this First Generation Opel Astra was produced under licence by Delta in P.E with the “Kadett” name being retained for the hatchback version of all South African Astras until 1999.

During this vehicle generation an Opel Astra which was unique to South Africa was manufactured and sold here called the Opel Kadett 200tS. This astonishing vehicle could trounce the BMW M3 in a quarter mile run at the time and was powered by a 2.0 16V turbo engine.

Did You Know? In an interesting turn of events (which has not occurred again until this day), the Kadett and Astra both won the title of ‘South African Car of the Year’ in 1994 and 1995 even though they were exactly the same versions of the car.
