A Used Hyundai Elantra for Sale is the perfect fusion of power, sophistication and style and it is easy to see why the Hyundai Elantra 2012 model was voted as the South African, Canadian and North American Car of the Year. Since then the Elantra has continued to make a name for itself as a car that has both good looks and outstanding safety features, all of which are wrapped into an economical to drive value for money package.
The Hyundai Elantra has been in constant production for almost 3 decades, and although the vehicle itself has undergone many technical upgrades and style changes, it is just as popular today as when it first rolled off the factory floor in 1990. Some of the more memorable year models in South Africa include the third generation Hyundai Elantra 2001 – 2005 and the fourth generation Hyundai Elantra 2006 – 2010. To find out more about the different older generation Elantra vehicles, as well as the most recent year models, please take a look at the vehicle breakdown below:
1st Generation Hyundai Elantra
|
|
---|---|
The first-generation Hyundai Elantra was launched in October 1990, and was originally designed to compete in terms of performance with the Ford Sierra and Opel Vectra. It was however substantially lower than its competitors in price. This generation of Elantra received a refreshed look in 1992, when the new Hyundai logo was added to the grille. One year later is received another refresh, which this time consisted of minor interior changes. In 1994 however a major facelift was done to the vehicle and both front and rear body panels were improved. Additionally, ABS brakes, front airbags, fog lamps, and electric side mirrors were added. This generation of Elantra was discontinued in 1995. Did You Know? The first-generation Hyundai Elantra was at first powered by the very reliable Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L petrol engine. It was only the later generation Hyundai Elantra sedans that were assembled using Hyundai designed and built engines. |

The second-generation Hyundai Elantra was sold in two variants, namely a sedan and a station wagon, both of which were made available in South Africa. This was the first Elantra to be sold in the country, and marked the launch of a vehicle brand that has now become synonymous with affordable quality and safe driving. In 1998 the second-generation Elantra received its first and only facelift, and the grille area was standardised in all models. Along with this cosmetic change, new engine options were introduced, which included a diesel engine option and a more powerful 2.0-liter engine option. Inside the cabin new seats and interior fabric trims were introduced. Did You Know? This generation of Elantra was the first and only one to be manufactured in Southern Africa. This was thanks to the Gaborone Assembly Plant in Botswana, which continued to manufacture this version of the Elantra for local and international sales up until the year 2000. |

3rd Generation Hyundai Elantra

---|---|
This generation of Elantra saw the introduction of front and front-side airbags, air conditioning, power locks, power windows and power steering as standard across almost the entire range. This, along with the improved reliability and low maintenance costs of the Elantra, helped to change people’s perceptions of the Hyundai brand, and the Elantra quickly became known as a “value for money” car, a reputation it still maintains today! Although there were a number of technical and model improvements made of this generation of Elantra’s lifecycle, the only true facelift occurred in 2003. This new look was made through the introduction of new headlights, new taillights, a completely redesigned grille, new look front and rear bumpers, as well as a refreshed hood and boot. Inside the cabin a redesigned dashboard was added to the car. Did You Know? Although known as a compact sedan, in the USA the Environmental Protection Agency requested that the car be reclassified as a mid-size car because of its exceptionally spacious interior. |

4th Generation Hyundai Elantra

The fourth-generation of Hyundai Elantra was debuted in 2006 and first sold as a 2007-year model sedan. This generation of Hyundai Elantra has become exceptionally popular in the used car market thanks to its reuse of an older vehicle design style called the “coke bottle styling”, which was popular in the automotive industry of the 1960s and 1970s. The fourth-generation Elantra received a commendable Good overall safety score from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in America. This rating took into account the Elantra’s frontal and side impact test scores given to this generation of Hyundai Elantra from 2009 until its discontinuation in 2010. During its lifecycle this version of the Hyundai Elantra was updated with improved features during the 2007, 2008 and 2009 calendar years. Did You Know? Dues to its impressive speed and reliability the Singapore Police Force used fourth-generation Hyundai Elantra Sedans as Fast Response Police Cars. They were the first Korean manufactured vehicles to ever be used as police cars outside of South Korea. |

5th Generation Hyundai Elantra

The fifth-generation Elantra debuted in April at the 2010 Busan International Motor Show. This version of the Elantra was the first to use Hyundai’s recognisable “fluidic sculpture” styling theme, which was originally introduced in the relaunched 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The 2013 Hyundai Elantra and 2014 Hyundai Elantra both received numerous updates to safety and comfort features, as well as limited visual improvements to the exterior body. The all-new Elantra Sport was also introduced, which sported an exceptionally powerful 2.0 litre Hyundai GDI engine. Did You Know? The fuel economy of the fifth-generation Elantra was one of the best seen in a Hyundai vehicle of this class to date. This was thanks to a low drag coefficient of just 0.28. To add to this further weight reduction, which also assisted in improving fuel consumption figures, was obtained in the Elantra through the introduction of an engine block that was made of aluminium instead of cast iron that was used in older model cars. |

These include some of the most recent 2018 Hyundai Accent, 2017 Hyundai Accent and 2016 Hyundai Accent models. Did You Know? The current generation of Hyundai Elantra has dropped Hyundai’s “fluidic sculpture” design ethos in favour of a new fastback look. This has given the Elantra a sportier appearance thanks to its sloped roofline and a less “curvy” look than its predecessor. |
