2 Generations of Fortuner SUV Perfection

Current 2nd Generation Toyota Fortuner
2015 (2016 in South Africa) – Current

The second generation Fortuner was launched in 2015, with the first two markets to open for orders being Australia and Thailand. The design “language” that was used to update the new look Fortuner was described by Toyota designers and build technicians as “Keen Look”, and it has been a popular style improvement that has most certainly caught the eye of many a South African seeking a good-looking, fun to drive, yet practical family SUV. From its slim Projector Headlights and Daytime Running Lights to its host of design features this is a vehicle that stands out from the current pack of SUV’s sold anywhere in the world.

The Fortuner is also no slouch in the accessories department either, and has some of the best standard safety and comfort feature ratings in its class. Inside the design strikes no resemblance to the previous generations interior, which was based on the inside of the Toyota Hilux cab, and now truly stands as a separate example of Toyota’s vehicle design prowess and how far the Fortuner brand name has come in a little over a decade.

Did You Know? The name “Fortuner” in not Japanese as is often the custom with so many Asian vehicles. It comes from the English word Fortune and is a good indicator of just how lucky a person is to own such a dependable SUV. In fact, the reliability of the Fortuner is so legendary that specialised versions of this outstanding vehicle are manufactured exclusively for the United Nations and other government agencies around the world.

1st Generation Toyota Fortuner
2004 (2005 in South Africa) – 2015

The first generation Toyota Fortuner was revealed to the public at the end of 2004 during the annual Thailand International Motor Expo. It was released for sale shortly afterwards in early 2005 and was an instant hit. So much so in fact that the unexpected demand for the vehicle saw Toyota decide to launch it in almost all of its growing overseas markets including Argentina, Brazil, Brunei, Colombia, Ecuador, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Singapore, South Africa, Venezuela and Vietnam.

Within 4 years Toyota released an updated model of the Fortuner which included even more safety and comfort upgrades in 2009. This was followed in 2011 by another Fortuner Facelift, which also saw the introduction of a 2.5 litre diesel engine. In 2013, the first-generation Fortuner received its final upgrades before the launch of second-generation. This included the introduction of a black leather interior, a new sound and entertainment system and an upgraded navigation system in top of the range models.

Did You Know? In 2012, the 2.5 Litre Turbodiesel Engine which is used to power certain of the first-generation Fortuner range was upgraded with a variable nozzle (VNT) turbocharger. This took what was essentially an already powerful vehicle and turned it into a beast. It increased the power and torque of the engine by about 60% when compared to the initial launch version of the Fortuner, while reducing fuel consumption by up to an impressive 30%. Furthermore these engine improvements made it exceptionally fast, with acceleration times of 0–100 km/h in about 11 seconds being the norm. This was even more impressive when mated to the larger 3.0 Litre engine which offered 0–100 km/h of less than 10 seconds.
