The Toyota Quantum, which is also known as the Toyota HiAce, Toyota Siyaya or Toyota Ses’fikile over the course of the vehicle generations, is a Minibus People Carrier and Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) that is popular both in the New and Used Vehicle market. In fact, the demand for Used Toyota Quantum Minibuses far outstrips the demand in South Africa thanks to their popularity in the Local Taxi Industry. This popularity is due to the fact that they are affordable, easy and cost effective to maintain and have a very good fuel consumption rate. They also come with a host of safety features which makes them great people carriers, this is especially true for the top of the range 14 seater version of the Quantum.
Since 1967 Toyota has been building Quantum vehicles under a number of different names, but they all essentially one family bundled into 5 generations of reliable Toyota’s. Todays Used Toyota Quantum is the 5th generation, however the previous generation was not sold in South Africa even though the 1st through to the 3rd generations were. The current Quantum range comes in numerous formats and trim levels, all of which we’ve listed below:
What is the Crew Cab? The Toyota Quantum Crew Cab is a Light Commercial Vehicle with a second row of seats to carry additional crew.
6th Generation Toyota Quantum Ses’fikile

---|---|
Following the decision to brand the sixth generation model the HiAce, the locally produced Toyota Quantum people carrier is known as the HiAce Ses’fikile. Some of the updates include a revised driver’s safety guard on the Ses’fikile taxi model which helped reduce Covid-19 transmission between the driver and passengers. They’ve scrapped all non-air-conditioned panel van and crew cab models and fitted the latter with a rear air-conditioning system. The Toyota Quantum or Toyota HiAce also has a reverse camera and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror. It will continue with the reliable and familiar 2.7-litre petrol and 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine options with outputs of 111 kW / 241 Nm and 75 kW / 260 Nm respectively. All Toyota HiAce models have rear-wheel-drive with a five-speed manual gearbox while the crew cab model has two variants of the 2.8-litre GD-6 turbodiesel engine. The panel van, crew cab and the 11-seater GL produce 130 kW / 420 Nm while the 14-seater GL and the VX deliver 115 kW /420. Did you know? The Toyota HiAce light commercial vehicle, produced in Japan, was first launched in October 1967. Since then, it’s been made available in a wide range of body configurations, including a minivan/MPV, minibus, panel van, crew van, pickup truck, taxi and an ambulance. |

5th Generation Toyota Quantum Ses’fikile
---|---|
Launched late in 2004 with the first models going on sale in South Africa in 2005, the current version of the Quantum has more model variants and trim levels than any other previous generation. Additionally, for the first time the gear lever has been moved to the dashboard. This helps with easier movement in the cabin and is just one of many new ergonomic improvements made to the cabin that has helped to make this generation of Quantum the biggest selling commercial vehicle in South Africa. Model changes have been minimal since its launch, with the majority that have occurred being cosmetic and not functional in nature. Standard safety features in the Quantum include ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), an immobiliser, central locking and the Toyota Microdot System. Did You Know? The Toyota Quantum is so popular that it has the dubious honour of being the most stolen vehicle not just here in South Africa, but also in almost all countries where it is sold, including Japan. |

3rd Generation Toyota Quantum Siyaya
---|---|
Launched in 1982 as a people carrier, with an additional LCV version being added to the range in 1985, this was the biggest version of the Quantum built up to this point. It was sold under the HiAce name in South Africa, but was affectionately renamed the Toyota Siyaya by the majority of South Africans who commuted to and from work in it on a daily basis. This generation became a taxi industry icon in South Africa due to its part in building on the burgeoning informal taxi industry that the second-generation Quantum helped establish. The reliability of this Quantum is unquestionable and even today many of the 3rd generation vehicles sold in South Africa can still be seen in operation as taxis on South African roads. Did You Know? Although this generation of the HiAce was discontinued in the 80’s it was still sold in South Africa until the 90’s. Older models are still found from time to time on our showroom floor and when they do they are generally from this generation. |

2nd Generation Toyota Quantum
---|---|
The 2nd generation Toyota Quantum was sold in South Africa as the HiAce, and it was this very vehicle range that helped to establish the modern informal taxi industry in South Africa. So important was this vehicle to commuting patterns that it literally became part of everyday slang in SA, and as with the name Hoover becoming synonymous with vacuum cleaners, so did the name HiAce become the standard name for all informal taxis no matter what vehicle brand they were for most of the 1980’s and well into 1990’s. Even today there are still the occasional references to HiAce in modern informal settlement culture, even though the current range of vehicles is known as the Toyota Quantum. Did You Know? Even after this version of the HiAce was discontinued, certain variants were still manufactured for sale in South Africa. Many of these vehicles were the taxis that ferried first time voters to voting stations during the first free elections in South Africa in 1994. This vehicle is now an indelible part of South African history and will be remembered fondly for years to come. |

1st Generation Toyota Quantum
---|---|
For a decade that spanned the 60’s and 70’s this first generation Toyota Quantum, which was called the HiAce, was the first minibus taxi on South African roads and was the school bus vehicle of choice for many South African Schools. This vehicle safely transferred multiple generations of children to school sporting events and made inroads into the as yet unestablished informal taxi industry of 1970’s and early 1980’s South Africa. Did You Know? The first generation HiAce is a rare model indeed due to the fact that were all ultimately used as public transport vehicles both here in South Africa and throughout the African continent. This means that the wear and tear on them over the years has resulted in less and less versions of the first generation Quantum being seen on SA roads. |
