Fourth Generation Kia Rio Hatchback 2018 – 2024
Unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in 2016, the Kia Rio hatchback was officially launched both globally and here in South Africa at the beginning of 2018. Unlike the third generation, the fourth-gen Rio was offered as a five-door hatchback — no sedan body style was offered locally. The hatchback gained 15 mm in length (now 4,065 mm) and 5 mm in width (1,725 mm) while its wheelbase extended by 10 mm to 2,580 mm. In late 2020, the fourth-generation Kia Rio received a facelift, featuring subtle exterior updates, more standard equipment, and refined engines. The 1.2- and 1.4-litre units each lost a kilowatt, producing 61 kW (down from 62 kW) and 73 kW (down from 74 kW), respectively. The 4th-gen Kia Rio was discontinued in South Africa in 2024 after a 24-year global run and succeeded by the K3, which wasn’t produced in the right-hand-drive guise. Did You Know? The 4th generation Kia Rio is based on the same platform as the Hyundai i20 and won the 2017 Red Dot Award for Passenger Car Design and the 2017 iF Design Award for Discipline Product.

Third Generation Kia Rio Hatchback and Sedan 2012-2017
Officially launched on March 1, 2011, at the Geneva Motor Show, both hatchback and sedan models went on sale early in 2012 in South Africa. The 3rd generation Kio range was already a well-respected vehicle in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. It was an immediate hit with the local South African driving public and went on to introduce many new customers to the Kia brand and become a regular sight on our showroom floors due to the ongoing demand for this Kia classic. The Kia Rio sedan and hatchback engine options included a 1.4-litre petrol and a 1.6-litre petrol engine. The Kia Rio hatchback was Kia’s global best-selling model in 2012 (466,826 units) and 2015 (466,573 units). The vast majority of Kia Rio hatchbacks for sale in South Africa come from this generation. This model variant has garnered several prestigious awards over the years, including Semperit Irish Car of the Year and Carsguide’s 2011 Car of the Year. This final award saw the Rio Hatch triumph over the Range Rover Evoque and the Ford Territory. The 3rd gen Kia Rio received a facelifted version in February 2015, introducing styling tweaks, including an updated version of the tiger-nose grille, refreshed bumpers and subtle interior upgrades.
